"We may have our differences, but nothing's more important than family."  - Miguel in the movie Coco

This message is so important now, especially as so many people can’t see family with the current restrictions. And many others have even lost their loved ones this year.

I loved the colorful Pixar movie, Coco. Aside from its powerful message, the painted animated animals became the inspiration for our first collection from Mexico.

Coco was inspired by the work of Edgar Fabian Ortega and his cousins Citlali and Vero. Together, they run a third-generation workshop called “Una Inspiración de mi Vida” (inspiration of my life) in San Martín, Tilcajete. This historic home of the Alebrije artisans is known for fantastical figures and dream-like designs that take their influence in part from Zapateco culture.

One of my favorite quotes from Coco comes from the character Abuelita:

Día de Muertos has begun! It's the one night of the year our ancestors can come visit us."

No pandemic can take this away from us.

Today, on this Día de Muertos, we’ll adapt and gather in new and different ways to remember those friends and family we have lost.

As Héctor said in Coco, “Our memories, they have to be passed down by those who knew us in life – in the stories they tell about us.”

I plan on telling family stories until I no longer can.

How do you honor your loved ones gone from this world?

Check out the vibrant pieces of the Mexico collection inspired by Coco and the work of Edgar Fabian Ortega and his cousins.
