“A MORAL COMPASS FOR HUMANITY” Oct 7, 1931 – Dec 26, 2021
“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” Desmond Tutu
Tutu was a champion for human rights and equality in South Africa and around the world. He was at the forefront of the anti-apartheid movement when hate was at its strongest, and never stopped preaching a message of LOVE.Â
Tutu was originally a teacher for three years before studying theology and becoming ordained as a priest. He achieved a master’s degree in theology and was eventually appointed Dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg, becoming the first black person to hold that position. He went on to become the Bishop of Lesotho, and eventually the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches. In 1984, Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to bridge the political and cultural divide between blacks and whites in South Africa that led to the end of the apartheid.Â
Desmond Tutu will always be remembered as an incredible figure who was known for his infectious spirit, and his messages of LOVE, acceptance, kindness, and equality all over the world.Â
